Gaming Sites and Forums | Asheron's Call | Ultima Online | Heavy Gear
Other Games | Street Fighter STG | Technology | Booze | Weird | People who Link Here
Old Man Murray - Awesome bitter reviews and articles. Highly recommended.
Lum the Mad - Lum started this site, and it was great. Then other people started writing for it, and it was not so great. Then Lum left, and it sucked. Now Lum is back, and it's good again. Simultaneously the king o the ranting investigator sites and a strong warning about the flaws of collectivism.
Deathlands - Lots of forums for a number of marginally-popular games, and host to a number of leagues, including the recent Starcraft league, which mat restart when Abaddon can get over the hassle of dealing with moronic kids.
Something Awful - Despite the recent flak over eFront's bizarre practices in the wake of the inevitable collapse of the dot com economy (built on Monopoly money), they have some funny stuff.
Asheron's Call Turbine Site - Well, at least it's better than that damn UO site. The best part of this used to be the subdomains assigned to individual developers' .plan files, which they no longer update.
Asheron's Call Micro$oft Site - A page with material mostly lifted from the Turbine site. Won't Turbine be surprised one day when MS announces that not only did they invent Asheron's Call, but all role-playing games, including pen and paper, and claim worldwide exclusive rights to them.
Asheron's Call Launch Page - The worst thing about playing is that you need to give MS page hits to do so.
Crossroads of Dereth - All AC E/N sites are pretty awful right now. Crossroads has followed the typical path of the E/N site, filled with inconsequential news about stuff in the latest broken updates, spoilers so you never have to figure anything out, and forums that are filled with posts so horrible they actually cause real physical damage to you when you read them. However, since they cornered the early market on fan input, this is the place to go to snag data.
Asheron's Call Strategy and Statistics - From the makers of UOSS. A lot of the same information from the other pages, some sneak peeks at hints of more information that might someday be quantified, and forums where people who never played the game whine about it.
Asheron's Call Vault - I never ever found a reason to go to the UO Vault. The AC vault is more interesting. For now, it's a good place for all of you who can't wait for AC to go load slow banners and look at similar info you can find on all the other sites, with a few additional tidbits. It does have links to the developers' .plan files that you can click on every single day in the hopes that they may have updated, something apparently missing from other sites.
Vitae Rising - In the tradition of the quality AC site, this one is never updated anymore. However it's got lots of funny crap on it, and periodically someone updates the news to tell you that their forums are broken again.
Forward Artillery - Now that Myscha has stopped obsessing over Everquest *shudder* it's being updated again. One of exactly two sites I have ever seen with an intelligent tactical treatment of the archer, and the other one isn't up. Kynn sucks! :P
Funny Sites (Non-Comics)
The World of Ultima Online: A Day In the Life - Ever read those completely incredulous OSI tours of what it's like to play UO? These make much more sense.
What the Fuck Man? - Gateway to everything evil... Joy of Villainy, UO Evil (yes it's back!) and McDonaldland. These are the evil sites which are not run by 12-year olds.
The Magnus Files - Collection of top ten lists and other ridiculous stuff from a regular on rec.games.computer.ultima.online. Save the Tank Mages!
Bumble the Bard - Some amuzin' poems with eye candy. Reminds me of a popular cry around the old days of dungeon PK/Anti-PK wars when an EV would suddenly change target for no reason: "KILL THE BARD".
Spleenshots! - Come on, join in the wacky racial slurs and killing of pack animals with evil FPK Spleen!
Comics Sites
Killed On Sight - One of my personal favorites. Also has links to all other UO comics sites which I don't have time to link to yet. Hasn't been updated since March 4, 1999.
B0N3D00D and pLaTeDeWd - Hits pretty close to home for anyone who has run into this type of PK... which comprises an alarming percentage of the UO populace. Still arguably the best UO comics.
Information Sites
Origin's UO Site - Makes it look good... if you haven't played it yet.
Origin's Update Site - See what improvements the development team will fail to implement in their next delayed patch.
Ultima Online Strategy and Statistics - The BEST site for hard data on UO.
Guild Sites
The Fuckheads - Funny as hell, dedicated PvP combatants. Includes a cool map utility (now with server software), and the random guild page generator! The Fuckheads have mostly quit playing UO, but they still wreak havoc in their forums.
The Adventures of Santiago - Santiago's stories are always funny, and man there's a lot of them. (Not enough for me though.)
Joy of Villainy's Story Section - A huge collection of stories submitted by evil players. Some are terrible, some are great... worth picking through.
Deathlands - Used to be known as Evil Little Men. Used to host the Deathlands HG ladder. Used to be the best source of data and messages about HG 2. People used to play Heavy Gear. Activision used to have a good reputation.
Shogo: Mobile Armored Division - A recent release from Monolith productions using the Lith engine and self-published, this has gotten a pretty big following, and well-deserved it is. This game ROCKS in terms of fun, graphics, sound and story. Multiplayer over LAN seems to work well, although internet play is still problematical (patch for this due out November 15).
Planetshogo - I assume this site is done by the Planetquake guys. Usually a better source of up to date information than the company site.
Starcraft - I just picked this up in late October, and it's the first realtime strategy game I haven't hated.
Planetquake - For all those who look down on Quake II as a mindless first person shooter, I say... BITE ME. Of course it's a mindless first-person shooter, but damn is it fun. Planetquake is the uber-resource for Quake and Quake II.
Rainbow Six - Not as fast-paced as Quake II but a lot more realistic and involved; a "thinking" first-person shooter. This allows snobs who look down on Quake II to go online under the pretenses of doing something intelligent and get killed by me a lot.
Street Fighter Central - The most comprehensive site. The best thing about this site is that it focusses on defining, clarifying and arguing the rules and playing the game as it was written rather than new maneuvers and styles (well ok, there are some of those too). Steve Karstensen is a very skilled GM and knows the rules better than anybody, except on those points I happen to disagree on. :P
Street Fighter Ultra - A really well put together resource, including some data on the use of Interpol in SFSTG, a die roller applet, guidelines for pregenerating ranked fighters, and a maneuver chart which looks disturbingly familiar.
Street Fighter Roleplaying Game Mailing List - Nothing here to read, but there is a signup form for the SFSTG mailing list (yes there is one), which I like because it reinforces the idea that people besides me really do play this system, yet there are so few of us I can still feel elitist and angsty about it. Go White Wolf!
Matt's Conversion Page - Conversions for maneuvers from SF II Trubo, SF Alpha 2, SF EX+ Alpha, and SF III. Some new rules and a treatment of Combat Sanbo.
Street Fighter Alpha - Chris Hoffman's page about additional rules and stuff. It's more clearly written than most typical pages of this sort.
Dogs of War - J. Scott Pittman's page. Host to rules about some sort of online SFSTG tournament that I can never actually pin down.
The Final Countdown - Primarily an information site about one campaign with some decent usable material for all GM's.
Anand's Hardware Tech Page - He started it when he was 15, and it quickly became one of the most respected tech sites on the net. You have to suffer through some meaningless hourly mini-updates, but it's worth it for his in-depth testing and good articles. Also has a good BBS.
Tom's Hardware Forum - Way better than his actual page. Good place to get advice or flames. I link to it directly to avoid giving Tom's Hardware Guide any more hits than necessary (hehe).
Tom's Hardware Guide - Once the best site for information, it has slown down somewhat. Tom seems to have been more concerned which asserting that he is the god of hardware than actually updating his site. Still a good place to go for basic information and occasionally interesting news. UPDATE: Tom has solved the updating problem by getting a bunch of other people to write the relevant articles. Beware the web celebrity syndrome.
3DFXCool - Manufacturers of video card cooling solutions, and remarketers for all other kinds of cooling solutions (except peltiers). I have dealt with them a lot and have never been disappointed.
Voodoo Extreme - Since Operation 3DFX went down the tubes, this is the best place for 3DFX accelerator information.
Tweakit - Dan Chadwick has been away for a while, but he promises to be back soon.
Thermalnet - You know you're ill when you start going to sites centered on cooling solutions. This is one of the bigger ones.
System Optimization Information - A good all-around optimization site.
Sysopt Vendor Survey - Information submitted by mail-order shoppers on various companies. Some of the information is a bit out of date (most notably the low rating for Multiwave), but a good resource nonetheless.
KillerApp - The best mail-order price hunter I've seen on the web. I always check here when pricing new hardware, or just idly thinking about dropping even more money on computer stuff I don't need.
Multiwave Direct - The place I bought most of my hardware from.
Penfolds - Arguably one of the best reds in the world, and surprisingly from Australia. Their soil is finally maturing I see.
About Scotch Whisky - The single best, most comprehensive whisky site I have encountered. Great tasting notes, histories of the various regions and individual distilleries, and a plethora of adjectives which I blatantly rip off to make my own tasting notes more confusing.
The Whisky Shop - Good source for web/mail order. Big and varied stock.
Laphroaig - The company site. A great site, funny stuff, contests, and a really good screensaver you can download for free.
The Macallan. The Malt. - Funny quips about their whisky, and not much else that's useful... scotch manufacturers have a ways to go to catch up on the net.
B. Fatt & Lazy Movie Reviews - Finally back after a long period of lameness. Best movie reviews on the net. Just go.
The Turkey Movie Page - Summary of all the Golden Turkey award winners and nominees. I will not be happy until I see Roger Daltrey as Franz Liszt in Lisztomania.
Seanbaby's Home Page - Words cannot describe the godliness that is Seanbaby's Home Page. Go now.
The Misanthropic Bitch - My dream woman.
Rinkworks Book-A-Minute - Highly recommended for those who feel that reading is overrated.
Mr. T versus Various Stuff - He's helluva tough!
International Trepanation Advocacy Group - You need this like you need a...
Leisuretown - Defies explanation.
The Campaign of Campaigns - Lo Faber's brilliant 1st edition AD&D campaign started over 7 years ago. It periodically comes out of hibernation for a few sessions when he's not too busy, then lies dormant again. A good example of how to be a decent DM in the world's dorkiest game.
