I can’t believe I’ve gotten no hatemail for that last rant. I’m sure I would have gotten a “geez, tone it down” at least. It must be because my cause is just and right.I haven’t read a single AC message board since my last post. I decided to check up on one today, since someone told me that the “dis gaem wil suk!!11″ crowd was less prevalent. This is the first thing I saw on the AC Stratics board…

TOPIC: Begining to look bad…Sabin – posted 08-18-1999 12:48 PM

It seems like a lot of these posts I am seeing from beta players are all saying the game is good for a little bit and then it sucks ala EQ. After reading these posts I have realized that the game is just like EQ in the way that there is just fighting so thats all people are gonna do anyways. This game is begining to look boring and pointless just like EQ and I think I would rather buy a dreamcast or play some 3d shooters instead of spend $60 and then $10 a month on another disappointment.

Well, at least he knows where to find better roleplaying experiences… Dreamcast and Quake.

Menju – posted 08-18-1999 12:57 PMHail Sabin,

Yeah, I would definetly put your money on something more productive. I just bought DarkStone, its a game that is almost identical to Diablo I/II. If you played and liked Diablo you will like DS. It is more like Diablo II then I whereas you can go to more than one town and fight traveling between them. There are more characters then Diablo I and its fully 3D so you can rotate the camera around your char and zoom in and out of the action. My girlfriend and I both enjoy playing it. Since I bought it I haven’t played either EQ or AC as they are both simple Hack n’ Slash one dimensional Fantasy Quake games, unfortunately. I plan on playing DS until Diablo II comes out then I will start looking to play NeverWinterNights. These current online games just don’t cut it for a RP’er. I’m sorry I keep raining on your parade with AC but I am just being honest. If you got bored with EQ, AC will be worst for you. Although they could change it a lot as it is Beta 2 but I really doubt it.

Cheers,
Menju, game wanderer

I’m just baffled by this. “If you played and liked Diablo you will like DS. It is more like Diablo II then I whereas you can go to more than one town and fight traveling between them. There are more characters then Diablo I and its fully 3D so you can rotate the camera around your char and zoom in and out of the action.“, followed by, “Since I bought it I haven’t played either EQ or AC as they are both simple Hack n’ Slash one dimensional Fantasy Quake games, unfortunately.“, and “These current online games just don’t cut it for a RP’er.” Was there a different game called Diablo or Diablo II that wasn’t all about fighting stuff and listening to lame canned voice files? I must have missed out on something.Oh, and you can do camera pans in AC as well, since every truly great roleplayer knows that panning in and out of the action is essential to being in character. “i cant roelplay wihtout a good camera angel 4 teh fights, TUBRINE FIX THIS NOW!!!111″

Sabin – posted 08-18-1999 01:17 PMThanks Menju, accually you saved me from wasting even more money on a useless, boring, disappointing game like I have done in the past MANY times.

It seemed Sabin was already not going to buy the game… why give credit? Believe me… as long as you buy computer games, you will waste money on useless, boring, disappointing games, since most of them are just that. To be completely safe, I suggest you simply not buy any more games ever, and entertain yourselves by posting on message boards about how crappy a game will be.

KingDog – posted 08-18-1999 02:27 PMI tend to agree with you as well…Altho I must say that AC held my attention for longer than EQ..after the first day of beta in EQ I could care less about the game…But AC’s vastness was cool and I liked being an archer for awhile (except the monster is on top of you after the first shot..grrr) I think the desingers should take a look and see what they can do… Or i’ll be another one not buying after final release.

Here we go again. “hi turbine d00dz, plz make the monsters stand still so i can shoot them without being hit, k thx.” this is of course followed by the “not buying” thing. In order to keep this player and others like him happy, I propose that a single-player version of Asheron’s Call be produced, complete with cheat codes for invulnerability and paralyzed monsters.

Sabin – posted 08-18-1999 04:22 PMIf I was in beta I would be able to see the game for myself but I found out about AC too late to get into beta.

Thank God.You know, this brings up something interesting… the “open beta” approach is a novel one, and we’re seeing its effects here. On the one hand, lots of people who are interested in the game get a good view into what it’s like to actually play and get hyped about it. On the other hand, people who like to whine about how a game will suck before playing or testing it have more ammunition to do so. I’m not sure either result is really bad. By far the best thing about open beta is the fact that testers can make up dumb chronicles about the game to get more hits for their lame websites. 8P

Konojsa – posted 08-18-1999 04:47 PMOne thing you should never do is form your opinion based solely off what you see on these message boards, especially during beta. One thing you will/should have noticed is that many people on this and other boards have an agenda (more rp, more pvp, etc) and are trying to influence the developers to adopt it. So a lot of the posts are worded for maximum effect such as “this game will suck if you don’t do ________” or “this game sucks because it doesn’t do _________.”

In my opinion AC is fine game. It is not the “next great thing” but it doesnt set the genre back either. Depending on your playing style (because it can’t please all of them) you will either have alot of fun or get bored quickly. Either way, the game doesn’t “suck”, it just doesn’t appeal to every possible playing style (or have the market to iteself like UO did).

Konojsa

Did Konojsa read my rant? I noticed at least 5 people hit the page, so he might be one of them.

Ozymandias – posted 08-19-1999 06:09 PMhey Menju…I’m confused! You are not satisfied with the role-playing aspect of AC yet you praise a Diablo knock-off which is nothing BUT hack-n’-slash (I’ve played it).

AC is what you make it. if all you want to do is go out and kill things….than that’s fine. The whole fellowship/allegiance thing allows for so much more in the way of roleplaying, though! once you establish yourself, you can earn experience without killing anything! (just ask Heden…23 followers and counting!) you gan go exploring with your fellows…you can role-play any personality you want (except a thief…for now). All in all, I think AC has the potential to become a great roleplaying game.

Ozy points out something good here, which is that it’s really up to the players. I think a lot of people buy an RPG and expect it to somehow “do the roleplaying for them” as soon as they log in. This philosophy helps to remove the onus of actually trying to be in some sort of character, and allows them to blame the game for their lack of acting ability. The old Heavy Gear I community had a stronger roleplaying element than most “roleplaying game” communities I’ve seen, and that was a giant robot simulator for chrissakes. It was all based on the players. Does the ability to emote things and wear clothes help you to roleplay a character better? Not really. Don’t blame a piece of code for your own problems with roleplaying.I stopped reading after this one, since I had a headache after reading it. There might be more responses to it eventually; the original thread is here. I don’t want to think about it too much… I’m going on vacation now. And yes, I will use the time in the great outdoors on a pristine lakeshore surrounded by rugged mountains to sit in my room and work on more AC stuff. So there.
